Security in Blackheath Village

During the recent BVS AGM at the Village Hall, we raised the topic of security and crime and had an open discussion with the villagers attending. During the past 12 months there has been an increased number of shed/garage break-ins and recently a car was stolen. The BVS want to act and take proactive measures to improve safety in our village.

We have now had initial meetings with Surrey Police and Surrey Security Services to develop a proposal for using a form of CCTV and signage to act as a deterrent which would be an effective measure to thwart the minor crime escalation we have experienced.

We will send our recommendations to the village later this summer, but we have general advice from our Police Community Support Officer (Nick Boxall) you should consider:

Alarms/CCTV
If you do not have an intruder alarm, the Police recommend you considering having an intruder alarm or CCTV fitted. Accredited professionals will inspect your property and provide a detailed quote for the alarm and or CCTV system. It is advisable to get at least three quotes.

Doors and windows
If you are considering new windows and doors, ask your installer to quote for products certified to PAS24 – 2022 standard. For additional security for windows and patio doors, laminated glass meeting the requirements of BS EN 356:2000 class P1A, should be installed on the internal pane. Particularly of ground floor and easily accessible windows. Laminated glass is best, but security can be improved by covering the glass panes could be covered with anti-shatter security film.

Locks
Consider upgrading the lock cylinders to TS007 3* (three star) standard, using a listed locksmith, from the Master Locksmiths Association.

Patio Doors
If you have double door patio doors with 2 handles, consider a ‘Patlock’ with an additional French Door and Conservatory Security Lock.

Rear Gardens
Protecting the rear of your property is very important. Ensure your fences are in good order. Generally, the maximum height for a rear garden fence is 2 metres.
